‘Tis the season of giving and there’s no better way to celebrate the holiday season than by sharing with others who are less fortunate.
Boise is a generous community, with several nonprofits that assist in the community. These are just a few ways to give back, but if you’re searching for a specific cause, feel free to reach out and we can help you find a nonprofit to support!
EMPTY BOWLS – THE IDAHO FOODBANK
One in eight Idahoans and one in six Idahoan children are considered food insecure in the state. The Idaho Foodbank works to bridge the gap by delivering food to people within all of Idaho’s 44 counties.
You can support the Idaho Foodbank’s mission by attending Empty Bowls, an annual event that occurs the Friday after Thanksgiving. The nonprofit collects handcrafted and handpainted bowls that have been created by artisans (professional and amateur), students and studios. You can select a one-of-a-kind bowl from the thousands offered and have it filled with a delicious soup donated from a local restaurant. All funds raised from the event benefit The Idaho Foodbank.
Empty Bowls Friday, November 29 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The Grove Plaza 827 W Main St. Boise, ID 83702
FESTIVAL OF TREES – SAINT ALPHONSUS
The Saint Alphonsus Foundation’s Festival of Trees is a Boise mainstay, with the event celebrating its 36th anniversary this year and having raised more than $10 million to improve community healthcare. The funds raised this year will support the women’s mobile outreach program that brings cancer screening tools to rural communities.
Wander around the festival to enjoy the gorgeous, festive trees, wreaths and decor that fill the Boise Centre. Bring the family to enjoy crafts and grab a photo with Santa at the North Pole Village, and enjoy a performance by one of the many local dance groups, choirs, and musicians that perform during the Festival.
Festival of Trees Wednesday, November 26 – Sunday, December 1 Boise Centre 850 W. Front St. Boise, ID 83702
GIVING TREE – WOMEN’S AND CHILDREN’S ALLIANCE
Beginning Friday, November 29, the Giving Tree will light up the Grove Plaza in downtown Boise. The tree, hosted by the Women’s and Children’s Alliance (WCA) and the Downtown Boise Association, benefits the WCA and lends a merry air to the square.
The tree lighting takes place that Friday from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and will include live music and local vendors. You can also grab a tag from the tree to find a way to support the WCA’s facility, shelter, and childcare needs. Items can be dropped off at the WCA’s office (720 W. Washington) or select Idaho Central Credit Union locations.
TURKEY DAY 5K
Get out your running shoes and go for a run before enjoying your Thanksgiving meal! The 9th annual Turkey Day 5K will benefit both the Boise Rescue Mission and local Special Olympics teams. The race starts at 9 a.m. at the corner of 6th Street and Main Street and winds its way through downtown Boise. You’ll be sure to work up an appetite for turkey dinner!
Even if you can’t get in on the race fun, you can cheer from the sidelines and bring canned fruit items to fill up the food pantries of the Boise Rescue Mission and City Light Home for Women and Children.
Turkey Day 5K Thursday, November 28 at 9 a.m. On Main Street, between Capitol Boulevard and 6th Street
