‘Tis the season to give and after you have checked off your shopping list for loved ones, consider donating to a local nonprofit. You can donate time or money, but a little bit of help from locals will go a long way during what has been a difficult year for nonprofit organizations. I have compiled a list of a few favorites for you to peruse below.
CATCH
For families without stable housing, CATCH is here to help. This nonprofit organization brings together regional government, faith communities, local businesses, and other organizations to assist local families who find themselves homeless. CATCH partners with local property managers and landlords to locate housing. The family signs a lease, while CATCH sponsors the application fee, security deposit, and rent for as long as needed. The program also focuses on financial independence through intensive financial literacy and the CATCH Match Savings Program. At least 80 percent of participating families reach self-sufficiency.
Speedy Foundation
It is thanks to The Speedy Foundation that Idaho has a suicide prevention hotline. After three-time Olympian, Jeret “Speedy” Peterson lost his battle to depression, his family and friends were surprised that Idaho was the only state without a hotline. Thanks to their efforts, that’s no longer the case.
The Speedy Foundation also focuses on training others to prevent suicides through Mental Health First Aid and QPR (Question, Persuade, and Refer).
PAWS Rescue, Inc.
Save a four-legged life this holiday season by supporting PAWS Rescue, Inc. This volunteer-run nonprofit rescues cats and dogs from high kill shelters and dangerous situations. No animal is off-limits for PAWS—the nonprofit saves all breeds, all ages, as well as animals who have been hurt, abandoned, abused, and neglected. The animal receives the necessary veterinarian care and then are either placed in a foster home or transferred to another no-kill shelter.
Idaho Humane Society
The Idaho Humane Society is another safe place for animals in need. There are many ways to contribute to the nonprofit, either financially or as a volunteer. The Idaho Humane Society is more than a place to provide shelter for animals, the nonprofit offers several programs including a pet food pantry for owners who are struggling to feed their pets.
Women and Children’s Alliance
A Boise institution, the Women and Children’s Alliance (WCA) has been serving the community for 110 years. Those who have been impacted by domestic violence or sexual assault can find no cost shelter and supportive services at the WCA. For the holidays, you can stop by the WCA Giving Tree in downtown Boise’s Grove Plaza to grab a gift tag to support the nonprofit. If you want to help the WCA year-round, you can host a donation drive, donate funds, or volunteer.
