Where to hike during muddy trail season in the Boise Foothills

Writer: Jenna KingJenna King

Muddy trail season in Boise is here – with rain in the forecast that can leave trails in the foothills muddy for days to weeks at a time. That said, the sun is also out and the weather is warming up, so people are itching to get out and do some hiking.

Ridge to Rivers has an interactive map and list of all weather trails on their website that can be used rain or shine, as the trails have a different composition that keeps them dry. Hiking on muddy trails can do damage to the trail and surrounding grasses and flowers that are important to the local ecosystem. Trail users can also widen the trails by walking around muddy spots, which can cause erosion and the trails can become difficult for trail crews to repair and maintain.

Here is the list of all weather trails Ridge to Rivers recommends using during this time of year:

These are the trails to definitely avoid when trails are muddy due to higher clay content, according to Ridge to Rivers:

If your favorite trail is closed, remember you can always safely get some activity in on the Boise Greenbelt, Mountain Cove Road and Rocky Canyon Road. Ridge to Rivers will close trails temporarily due to muddy conditions, especially if the trail is at risk of long-term damage due to continuous use.

Ridge to Rivers posts daily trail conditions on its Facebook page. You can also check out the interactive map for the latest conditions before heading out to get some sun.
